In rammed earth construction the local soil is mixed with 8-12% of cement to construct the wall this makes stabilized rammed earth an environmentally sound material. It has low energy alternative to conventional walling materials. It has potentially low manufacturing impacts, depending on cement content.
Rammed earth is very strong in compression and can be used for multi-storey load bearing construction. One of its major advantages is that, these can be made with almost all kinds of mud with varying percentage of stabilization and one can achieve different variations in color, finishing and texture of the wall.
Like any other mud wall, it is fire resistant and also ensures good insulation. These walls are low in maintenance and with adequate reinforcement, can also be used in earth quake prone areas.
Advantages :
Environmental
Mud being the major constituent and found on-site, it decreases the amount of energy consumed in construction and transportation. Rammed earth is a low greenhouse gas emission product and negative impacts are solely related to transportation and manufacture of cement which forms only 5-10 % of the total mixture. These walls provide sufficient thermal mass to buildings to ensure excellent thermal performance and works very well in extreme climate. It requires less artificial heating and cooling.
Social
The construction of rammed earth walls being more labor intensive than the conventional wall construction materials, gives an opportunity of employment along with a chance to learn a new skill. Contributing more towards social sustainability compared to other walling alternatives.
Economical
In comparison to a brick or stone wall, rammed earth walls do not require painting, mortar or other wall finishing treatments which lowers the costing.
